Formal recognition by an authorised institution of the validity of a certificate / diploma obtained abroad.

The above definition is consistent with:

• the definition included in the Lisbon Convention of 1997 on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region,

• the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on recognition of professional qualifications,

• and the definition by CEDEFOP (2008).

Recognition of qualifications must not be confused with validation.

With reference to EQF and PQF learning outcomes are validated whereas qualifications awarded abroad may be recognised.
